WHY YOU SHOULD SET HUGE GOALS INSTEAD OF SMART GOALS

Do not set S.M.A.R.T goals, girl. Set yourself H.U.G.E ones instead. Did I just come up with a new goal setting acronym?
Let me quickly explain what SMART goals are and then I tell you what I mean by HUGE goals. And why having huge goals are so much smarter, after all.
S.M.A.R.T was, so it's believed, firstly stated by George T. Doran in an issue of Management Review, in 1981.
He explained there, the S.M.A.R.T. way to write management's goals and objectives. It discussed the importance of goals and the difficulty of setting them.

Actually, before you get me wrong, I don't want to bash SMART Goals at all, they have their space, but I can explain to you quickly where I see the problem.
Smart Goals is a methodology, mainly used in Project Management of large corporate projects. And that's where I see its space, like many other methodologies and frameworks.
But I'm talking to you girl, and you are probably here because of your personal growth or having more success with your small business. Not because you are a project manager of a large-scale IT project with millions of dollars budgeted. (And if so, you might just land on the totally wrong blog, sorry!)
So the point is, SMART goals aren't wrong at all, but if you want to use them for developing yourself, or your small business or blog, they have one big problem, and this is hiding somewhere between:
Guess what, to really get fired up and be motivated; you need HUGE goals, goals that seem unrealistic at first, but give you the needed motivation to take action and keep going.
I advise you always to DREAM BIG, probably not an advice I would give someone that manages a million dollar project. In this case, setting realistic goals are more appropriate.
And that's why I love coaching YOU and not the project manager of a Fortune 500 company. (Glad I left my corporate career behind me!)
To change yourself, to become successful beyond your imagination, you have to set goals which are outside your imagination right now. You have to widen your range of possibilities. You have to expand your world.
Let me show you how you can set the right goals, that actually take care, that you will achieve your goals. The goals that will spike the right motivation. That will make you take action.

MEDIOCRE GOALS BRING MEDIOCRE RESULTS
Your goals have to be huge. They have to be so big, that they may seem unrealistic to you, but at the same time, so tempting, that you, once you have a plan on how to achieve them, are so fired up that you take massive action to achieve them.
Mediocre goals are a bit like a used middle-class car, they are boring, and they don’t always do what they should.
And thinking about that car, have this used middle-class car as a goal. will never trigger the emotion you need to really take massive action.
Why not aiming to drive a car like a pink ford mustang. Now we are talking?
That is unrealistic, you say? It would be freaking great if you could turn up to your next girls night out with such a car, but it is absolutely out of range?
Let me tell you once and for all. It is realistic. And I can prove it. There are girls out there buying cars like this. There’s plenty of them! It is entirely realistic to drive such a car. Also for you.
Same applies to your dream house. The one with the huge garage. And the pool. And the nice driveway. The huge walk-in wardrobe. And the built-in cinema or a private spa. It is realistic! Also for you!
What is unrealistic is that you will ever drive a pink mustang, live in a huge mansion or generate a seven digit income with the same amount of action, willpower, or dedication you are investing today. You have to become another person to achieve other things.
And to change yourself, you need to be motivated; there must be a fire burning inside of you. The wild urge, to take action. Massive action. You need to be willing to invest your heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears. You have to be willing to do whatever it takes to reach your goals!
And that's where SMART goals usually fail.
WHY MOST PEOPLE ARE SETTING SMALL GOALS, AND WHY THIS IS REALLY BAD!
Most people are setting small goals. They are setting goals, which they think are achievable for them. The problem is that with that approach you are not even scratching the surface of your potential! Your goals are just not big enough, to achieve big things in life.
You are hindering yourself to develop. Sure, you need to become another person. You need to leave “that middle-class car person” behind and become a “pink mustang person.” But hey, why the heck not?
I believe the pink mustang person is so much cooler and lives a more exciting life anyway, don't you think so?
Let’s say, you are driving a car, and your goal is to drive the new model of the exact same car, you already know how to achieve this. Because you have done it already. You can surely strongly believe to reach it, but is it really motivating you to go the extra mile? Does it really push you to step outside of your comfort zone?
No, it does not. You will stay where you are, and keep on living the life you have lived until today.
You can achieve EVERYTHING, why would you bother aiming for the second best?
Orison Swett Marden, an American inspirational author who wrote about achieving success in life and founder of the SUCCESS magazine, put it this way: “All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.”
Or in the words of Michelangelo: “The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”
So really think about, do you still believe, that SMART goals are your smartest choice?

START BELIEVING IN YOURSELF
It all starts with what you believe. If you can believe to reach a certain goal, you start taking massive action. The action you are taking is changing your results, and these results are changing your overall belief system.
Yes, you need to start believing first. You have to have that huge goal which is truly emotionally capturing you, and you need to have the vague feeling, that you could maybe even reach it.
Then you start taking action. If you believe you can do it, your brain will show you evidence, which what you think is right; “you can do it!” Your brain is a marvelous machine. It is helping you to achieve everything you believe in.
That’s what Henry Ford meant when he said: "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right."
Even if the first results on your way to the top are small and unimpressive, they are proof, that you are going in the right direction! And you will become extremely motivated to take the next step.
I mean it’s like an avalanche. First, one little piece of snow and ice is moving slowly. Then this small part is pushing bigger parts, they suddenly become faster and faster, bigger and bigger and in the end, it is a huge, powerful, unstoppable force which can’t be stopped by anything.
It’s the same with your beliefs. First, you will have a small success. A first small evidence that you can do it. This gives you the confidence, the commitment, the courage to take bigger action. Bigger action means bigger results. Bigger results mean bigger motivation, greater confidence, and a better commitment!
In no time, your momentum will be so big, that all your fears, doubts, and hindering influences will be nothing more than little trees in the way of a huge powerful avalanche! Nothing and nobody will ever be able to stop you!
All it takes is three things:
Motivation: you need a reason, your WHY!
Dedication: You need to give all you have. You need to be willing to invest all you got. You have to be ready to take massive action!
Belief: You have to trust your abilities. Appreciate the little things first. They will be the base on which you build unshakeable belief that you can do it.
